In the year 1914 we adopted a baby boy three weeks old. The physician who told us of the baby failed to tell us of its physical condition. Soon I found the child was suffering from malnutrition. When I asked the physician about the child, he said if I could raise him until he was nine months old I might save him. I then called another physician, who did all he could by his words of encouragement as well as his medical skill. Whenever I called him he would come lovingly, even after he had told me he had done all he could.

The baby was then five months old and weighed less than at birth. One day at noon I could see the end indeed seemed near, and being afraid I put the baby in his carriage and went to the home of a neighbor. While talking to her on a subject far from Christian Science the thought came to me, "I wonder what Christian Science could do for the baby," and immediately voiced my thought. She looked at me in amazement and said, "I don't know, I am sure, but the lady next door might help you, as she is a Scientist." Only those who have experienced such a blessing can know how I felt when the words of comfort and assurance came to me that my baby could be healed.

The Scientist gave me the address of a practitioner and I went home and wrote him a letter asking for help. When I look back I can see there was more than a sick baby to be healed, as the letter was full of fear. After I had received a reply from the practitioner telling me he would gladly help us I told my husband what I had done. At first he resented it and said that it was all foolishness, but later decided we would try it anyway; with the result that in one month the baby was healed and had gained five and one-half pounds and was drinking two and one-half quarts of milk in twenty-four hours. The boy is now a robust and healthy child. Every day when I think of the presence of this dear child in our home, who gladdens our hearts, the Bible saying comes to me, "And a little child shall lead them."
