Reading the testimonies in the current issue of the Sentinel...
Reading the testimonies in the current issue of the Sentinel has brought the realization that to delay in giving my own is to withhold a service which may prove helpful to others, so it is with a thankful heart that I write this, hoping it will meet the eyes of those who still doubt.
In May, 1918, I contracted tubercular disease and was in a hospital in a very serious condition. Since I was not strong enough to take a train journey, the doctor suggested my going by ambulance to a sanitarium. He said that with the best of care and attention in sanitariums for two years I might recover. As I was a young man and had always enjoyed fairly good health, this verdict brought such a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness to me that I did not care whether I lived or died.
Just when everything seemed to be slipping from me, a relative who had been healed in Christian Science visited me at the hospital, and said just the kind of comforting words I was most in need of. She also left with me two Sentinels and a Journal, asking me to look them over. I had not perused them very long before reaching the conclusion that God, who is good, never intended me to be sick for two years, and that it was entirely up to me to prove it. After reading further I decided on no account to go to any sanitarium, or believe such a course necessary. After a great deal of difficulty I was permitted to leave the hospital, but the doctor said that I was simply going to my grave. However, the Christian Science literature had filled me with a new hope and a batter understanding, and after attending a testimony meeting for the first time, I asked a practitioner to treat me. He did so, and, following the third treatment, just one week from the time I left the hospital, I was back at work and have enjoyed good health ever since. One ceases to wonder at the heartfelt gratitude so often expressed by Christian Scientists, when one contemplates the wonderful blessings which come after we are led to this beautiful truth.
