Cross and Crown

Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross dally, and follow me." In this instruction he plainly says it is impossible to follow Christ unless we first deny or contradict the evidence of the personal senses. Is it a cross always to deny these senses? It seems to be so at this stage of our progress, but it is not half so hard as not to deny the false evidence; that is, to let it go unchallenged, for later it will have to be destroyed and it will be more difficult and possibly will have caused suffering and sorrow in the meantime.

Are we familiar with the metaphysical meaning of the emblem of Christian Science, the cross and crown? They must have for us a profound meaning and must be understood aright before they can be demonstrated in our lives. Mrs. Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" on page 574 says in this connection, "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares."

Paul said, "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." This is the scientific method of crowning every cross. It encourages and inspires one to remember that every cross, every trial, can and must be crowned. When we strive to crown every cross by overcoming, we are learning the meaning of the cross and crown which adorns all the works of our Leader, our lives will be transformed and adorned with greater humility and love, and we shall be known of all men as genuine Christian Scientists.
