It is about twenty-three years since Christian Science was brought to my attention, at a time when I seemed to be in the world without hope and without God. I was suffering from tubercular disease in the last stages. Physicians and change of climate had alike failed to help me. Finally the doctor said there was no chance for me to get better, and advised me not to take any more medicine, but to drink whisky as it would keep me alive as long as anything else. I followed this advice for nearly a year, and it was then that Christian Science found me.

At that time Christian Science was very little known in my neighborhood, but I attended services in a private house and shall never forget those dear people. The service was all strange to me, but they told me what Science was; and a ray of hope sprang up in me. They lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I started to study it, with the result that I steadily grew better from that time. I was finally thoroughly healed by studying this book, and have remained so ever since. I was perfectly healed of the tobacco and liquor habits as well. I did not quit them, they quit me; and I have had no desire to smoke or drink since, for which I am truly grateful. Christian Science has been our only physician during these years, my wife and daughter also trusting all to Truth, for which we are very thankful to God and grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
