From 1910 to 1915 Christian Science healings were three times brought to my attention without interesting me. Brought up to believe that there is less danger of hypocrisy outside of churches than in them, I was skeptical of religion's value. I knew nothing of the Bible, and when through Christian Science I learned of Jesus' works I was astonished. However, I had always been firmly convinced of the existence and goodness of God.

I had never been able to breathe freely, and early in 1914 this condition became distressing. A physician increased my fear by saying that I was in danger not only of losing my sense of smell, but of losing my nose as well. From then until 1915 I was under a doctor's care; nevertheless, I grew worse. I had colds and grippe continually, and was away from work six weeks on account of influenza and pleurisy. Finally faith in material remedies was lost. The thought of Christian Science constantly recurring, I decided to try it. With relief I discarded all material means and began reading Science and Health on January 1, 1915. Then I had several treatments for my nose, and though this healing was slow, I now breathe with perfect freedom and my sense of smell is unusually acute. Colds and attacks of grippe were healed, and as my understanding grew, they became less frequent, until now I have been practically free from them for some time. In 1918 an attack of influenza was overcome and there have been no ill effects.

I have been healed not only of physical ailments, but to a great extent of self-consciousness, pride, and a desire to domineer. I have also had much help in business. Through Christian Science a difficult examination was taken without nervousness or fear, and I know that it was only possible for me to do my best because of this freedom. I passed highest among some fifty applicants, while in a similar examination taken in a lower grade before I knew of Christian Science, I barely passed. Again, a dangerous, ice-covered mountain trail was traveled without mishap and I was enabled by a realization of Truth, and consequent freedom from fear, to enjoy the trip. This brought an appreciation of what I owe for the ever availability of Truth.
