Although "G. S. H." says that Mrs. Eddy claimed to...
Mail and Empire
Although "G. S. H." says that Mrs. Eddy claimed to have discovered "a special brand of Truth," no such claim was ever made by her. She did claim, however, to have discovered "the might of Truth in the treatment of disease as well as of sin" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii). Her system, Christian Science, is based on the premise that Truth is knowable and demonstrable. Christian Scientists do not make the preposterous claim that they understand all of the truth, but that the knowledge of the truth afforded by Christian Science is genuine, and that the healing of physical ailments which results is part of the evidence of its truth.
This operation of Truth in human consciousness is entirely different from any form of suggestion or hypnotism. It accompanies reliance on God, divine Mind, as the only power, and thereby the beneficiary is not subjected to the will of any person. The process being purely spiritual, it is free from the danger and evil of mesmerism, and is the application of the spiritually scientific interpretation of Christianity. Similarly, in Christian Science the quality of the thinking is of prime importance, and the spiritual benefit the most valuable effect of it. The healing of sickness is secondary but quite necessary, and to the sick man it is the immediate desideratum. Our great Exemplar did not turn away the sick who looked to him for healing, but demonstrated health as a proof of the love of the Father.
If "G. S. H.," by reason of his particular theological training, and perhaps because he has not earnestly tried to understand Science and Health, presumes that the "ordinary, sane people" find it uninteligible, nevertheless, hundreds of thousands of readers have found it blessedly intelligible, a book to be pondered and studied, a book which has proved to be, as it purports to be, the "Key to the Scriptures," a book whose teaching, when put into practice, has given them health, happiness, and a fuller life. This work continues to prosper throughout the world.
