[Written for the Sentinel]

"Let there be light"

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.—Gen. 1:3.

LET not the argument of human reason
Whisper within thyself: It must be so;
This false belief, though only for a season,
Is the effect which mortal thoughts bestow.

Can Love be less than love, administering
Sickness and sorrow, false belief and fear,
Dimming the glory of each bright to-morrow,
And casting over every joy a tear?

Where is thy faith, O faithless generation?
Lift up thine eyes toward the clearer height,
See the bright truth, with radiant revelation,
Vanquish each shadow of receding night.
