Among the Churches

Current Notes

North Carolina.—Apparently only two sermons criticizing Christian Science have been published in the state during the year. These criticisms were at once answered and the answers were promptly published. One paper published an editorial criticizing our cause, but immediately accepted and published a correction. Many of our lectures have been printed in full, and many of the papers have been quite friendly, while a great majority have made no mention of our cause either for or against. During the session of the legislature which met in January, 1919, a bill was introduced and about to be passed for compulsory examination of all public school children. The following provision was added to the bill: "No pupil or minor shall be compelled to submit to medical examination or treatment whose parent or guardian objects to the same. Such objection may be made by a written and signed statement delivered to the pupil's teacher or to any person who might conduct such examination or treatment in the absence of such objection."

Evansville, Ind.—In addition to the regular Thanksgiving program at First Church of Christ, Scientist, yesterday [Nov. 27], the payment of the church building debt was a dedicatory message. The present home on Mulberry Street, which is the sixth home of the church in this city, was erected in 1916 at a cost of thirty-two thousand dollars, but the building was not dedicated until yesterday, it being the rule in the church to dedicate only after the debt has been paid.
