The Gazette
In the June issue of the Presbyterian Record the editor devotes several pages to a talk on what he apparently conceives to be Christian Science, but the subject is flagrantly misrepresented. It is now generally understood that Christian Science is based entirely on the teachings of the Scriptures; indeed, Mrs. Eddy has said on page 110 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in referring to her discovery of Christian Science, "The Bible was my only textbook;" and there are many thousands who declare to-day that the Bible was a sealed book until they commenced to study it in the light of Christian Science. To say that Christian Science rejects the cardinal truths of the New Testament is absolutely the reverse of the facts of the case, and must have been made under an utter misapprehension of what the Christian Science textbook teaches on the subject. On page 497 of that book, which is the Christian Scientists' Bible commentary, it is specifically stated as the first religious tenet of Christian Science, that "as adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."
In denying the reality of matter Christian Scientists do so in the sense that Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." It will also be remembered that Paul said that "the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." The statement that "Christian Science simply declares the disease is not there and bids you believe it is not there," is made from either ignorance or malicious intent to mislead the uninformed, because Science and Health specifically states on page 460: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth of being."
Many cultured and deep thinking men and women of all professions and ranks of life are accepting the teaching of Christian Science and enjoying its benefits. Anyone who has practiced Christian Science knows that it is the opposite of mental suggestion. Christian Science healing is the effect of pure, exalted prayer, the result of a realization of God's presence, power, and love.
