In the spring of 1916, when I had been told that it would be necessary to have a slight operation performed for the removal of a tubercular gland, I turned to Christian Science for help. A neighbor had kindly lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy and I opened the book with a double question: Would I find in it the true explanation of the Bible and how to live in accordance with its teachings, and what was there in it that could heal me? I felt that if the first question was answered the healing must follow. After reading but a few moments I realized that I had found what I had always wanted, and felt intensely grateful. At once all sense of pain and soreness disappeared, and within less than a week the healing was complete.
Since then I have had many proofs of the healing power of Christian Science, among them the overcoming of Spanish influenza, spinal meningitis, an acute attack of rheumatism, sore throat, colds, and many other discordant conditions. I have always been a student of the Bible but there were many passages I could not understand. Christian Science is explaining these, and this is one of the strongest proofs to me that it is the truth as taught by Christ Jesus and perceived in less degree by many of the Old and New Testament writers. I am very grateful for the steadfastness with which Mrs. Eddy declared this truth that was revealed to her, and that she never wavered in her efforts to restore the "lost element of healing" (Manual, p. 17). I am grateful for the Church Manual with its rules for the protection of the truth, also for Mrs. Eddy's other writings. I am grateful for class instruction, which has enabled me to understand more of the wonderful truth, for membership in The Mother Church, and also for the opportunity to work in a branch church. I am grateful, too, for the help which we receive from the Christian Science literature and from the loving efforts of teachers and practitioners.
