[Written for the Sentinel]

The Awakening

I prayed to God in tears and sorrow,
I feared to-day—I feared to-morrow.
Then Love came whispering soft and sweet:
Oh, learn, dear child, at Jesus' feet.

For what you fear is but a seeming.
Awake; spend not your time in dreaming!
There's work to do, and few to labor,
Work for yourself, and for your neighbor.

I learned to know that good is power,
That Truth and Life rule every hour,
That man reflects but God, whose light
Makes evil fade away from sight.

I pray no more in tears and sorrow.
I greet to-day—I greet to-morrow.
For lessons learned at Jesus' feet
Can calm all fear, all problems meet.

The days are full of love and labor,
Work for myself, love for my neighbor.
And working, loving, strength I find
To bless the world and all mankind.
