I have been reading the Bible and the Christian Science...
I have been reading the Bible and the Christian Science literature for about four years and wish to tell of some of my experiences. One evening not many months after becoming interested in this religion, after an hour's thoughtful reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I found myself gazing at our small stock of medicine with a smile that gladdened me all through, for I was convinced of the utter foolishness of believing that it could possibly possess any real healing power. The result of my changed thought is this: the ailments for which I believed it necessary to take material remedies every week in order to keep myself in condition to do my work, went with the drugs. I have never taken a dose of medicine since, nor have I been subject to those ailments.
For about fifteen years I had suffered from severe attacks of quinsy, occurring about three times a year, and prior to my study of Christian Science they had become very severe and of longer duration, so that for three or four days I could not speak and had to sit in a chair nights. Sometimes it was two months before I would recover. One Saturday I went to work feeling as usual. By ten o'clock, according to past experiences, I was doomed to a period of misery. I clung to what I knew of Christian Science and refused to go home, but grew steadily worse. At nine o'clock, when I stopped work, I could barely speak. Finally I was home, seated as comfortably as possible with Science and Health before me. Silently asking to be guided aright, I opened the book and began to read the second chapter. I read it carefully through, prayed as we are taught in Christian Science, and retired. The physical condition was unchanged, but I had a certain assurance of peace—a feeling that I should rest. The next morning, instead of moping around the house, I spent about three hours digging in the garden, a song of gladness in my heart. I had never before been able to stop an attack from running its customary course once the first symptoms had appeared.
About three months after this I was asked by a relative if having my tonsils and adenoids removed several years before had not benefited me greatly. Without thinking, and more earnestly than was necessary, I declared that I had had quinsy worse since then than before. Immediately I was filled with remorse, humiliation, and fear, and a return attack of the old enemy followed. A practitioner was called and through her loving, loyal efforts I was back at work after five days. That was more than three years ago and I have never had this trouble since and feel that I have been permanently healed.
