In a recent issue there appears a report of a sermon which is such a sweeping and wholesale condemnation of Christian Science as our critic conceives of it, that your moderate readers may be relied upon to discount its gross exaggeration. That Christian Science denies every fundamental teaching of the Bible was the leading accusation uttered by this gentleman.

A study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," written by Mrs. Eddy, shows that it presents a spiritual interpretation of the Bible. It bases its teaching on the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Lord's Prayer, emphasizing the teaching and practice of Christ Jesus as of towering importance. It also displays the books of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation inclusive, as containing inspired statements of prophecy, of the history of God's people, and records of imperishable value. It insists that the spiritual truths gleaned from the sacred Scriptures are of perennial interest and apply to our present day conditions and needs. Christian Science elucidates every doctrine of Christianity, although our critic alleges that it denies them.

Christian Science teaches that God is not a magnified mortal, but is infinite personality or Spirit; that the Trinity is Truth, Life, and Love; that spiritual man is the child of God, created "in his own image." The omnipotence of God, infinite good, divine Mind, is a fundamental teaching of Christian Science, and all Christian denominations also claim to teach it in some sense; but the practical question is, To what extent do we believe that God is all-power and all-presence, able and willing to forgive "all thine iniquities" and to heal "all thy diseases"?
