Many blessings have come to me during the seventeen...

Many blessings have come to me during the seventeen years in which I have been a student of Christian Science Early in December, 1918, on a return trip from the East, I was taken violently ill, but I thought of Jacob and knew that God, omnipresent good, would sustain me as Jacob was sustained. In reviewing the events of the previous few days, I realized where a door had been left open for error to creep in. What was thought to be a preventive measure against the spread of the so-called epidemic, influenza, was the posting of placards in a conspicuous spot in railroad stations and other public places, sounding a warning note. At the time other problems had occupied my thoughts, and I had merely given these warnings a passing notice, being mentally asleep to the suggestion of contagion.

On reaching home I was weak and ill, and during the next few days complications, such as acute indigestion and pneumonia, presented themselves. The faithful practitioner whom we had called upon for help, remained at my bedside for twelve hours one night. I was so weakened to sense that it seemed impossible for me to get any clear realization of the truth for myself, and I even refused to repeat healing statements lovingly voiced by those about me. A few days before Christmas I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, and the testimony of the senses made a mental picture which it was difficult to eradicate; but suddenly the thought came surging into consciousness that what I had seen did not reflect man made in the image and likeness of God. The spiritual awakening had come, and when the practitioner called that afternoon she rejoiced with me. Needless to say, her work was done and treatments were discontinued that day. While I was still confined to my bed and could not walk across the room without support, I knew I was healed and many hours were spent in the study of the Bible and Science and Health.

I have never known a more happy Christmas than the one that year. I understood Christ as defined by Mrs. Eddy on page 583 of Science and Health, "The divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." I was able to prepare dinner, and attend our testimony meeting in the evening, with a heart overflowing with thankfulness to God and gratitude to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her untiring effort in behalf of mankind. Two days later I was called upon to do work which necessitated my being away from home for several days. I went about my Father's business and the work was completed, bringing a full realization of my healing. My daily prayer is that my life may attest my gratitude.
