It is with much joy and gratitude that I write of what Christian Science has done for me. In 1915 I began to feel very poorly, and at last a stubborn cough manifested itself. Several physicians said I had tubercular disease. My father and my sister having passed on with this trouble, my condition naturally caused my mother and my husband great fear. I had heard of Christian Science but knew nothing of its teaching. I had met a few Scientists but did not know them well enough to ask them about their religion; however, they seemed so kind and loving to every one, and were always so happy, that I used to wonder why they were so different from other churchgoing people. I had never even seen any of the literature, yet during those dark hours, the still, small voice kept saying to me, Try Christian Science. It was so clear to me that I wonder now why I did not obey, but the thought would always come that it could not do me any good. I rejoice in this experience, for it brought me nearer to God.
In July of the same year I was obliged to go to my mother's home and take up the out-door life. This continued until November, when to material sense I seemed to be running down very rapidly, and one doctor made the remark that I had a hard fight before me. I was then moved to a sanatorium, where I was a bed patient for nine months. Although everything possible was done for me, it was of no avail. In July, 1916, still a bed patient, I went back to my mother's to end, as I thought, the short time I had on earth; but "love never faileth," and at last this was proved to me by a dear lady, a stranger at the time. Passing by our house and seeing me on the piazza day in and day out, she stopped one day and asked if I would not like to have Christian Science help. I replied, "It can't help me;" but this kind stranger sent a practitioner to me, and on the third day I could truthfully say that Christian Science had helped me. The following week I mowed a very large lawn for my mother, proving that in God is our strength. My healing is perfect. I am better in every way than ever before and happy beyond words to express.
This is only one proof that I have had of God's love and care. Chronic bowel trouble was overcome with the first treatment. Severe backache, from which I had suffered ever since my childhood, has completely disappeared, and I can truthfully say that I am newborn. Christian Science is helping me to live a better life, to love my neighbor as myself, and to think more kindly of others. I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for being brave enough to stand the abuse of mortal mind, and to prove again to a sick world Jesus' words, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
