Profitable Seed
A Christian Science organization in a small town has some problems of which larger ones possibly know nothing. Our society is in a small town in Michigan, and at times the workers have become discouraged because so few came to the services. Many of our members have moved away, and sometimes we have only three or four persons at a Wednesday evening meeting; but we have the usual reading even if there are not enough for the singing.
Recently we learned of a result of these services which gives us much to be thankful for. Our First Reader, while visiting one of the large cities, attended a Wednesday evening meeting at a Christian Science church, and after the service was over, while talking with those present, she found that there were ten persons at the meeting who had come from her home town. While not all were members, all were from our little society. Hearing of this we began to think of others who had gone out from our society into the world and who were doing good work, and were surprised at the number. When we realized the good that has come from the seed sown here, we were indeed grateful.
We have always tried to keep very close to the requirements of the Manual of The Mother Church, and others in speaking of our society have often said that we were free from the errors into which some small organizations unwitingly fall. We feel that this is because we follow the Manual just as closely as a small organization can. Our Readers are always members of The Mother Church, and they do not serve on the church board. When it is realized how few we are in number it will readily be seen what it means to work out many problems. We are helped so much by all of the literature which comes from The Christian Science Publishing Society, and often we are helped, when a problem is to be solved, by studying some article in the Journal or Sentinel. We send this article hoping it may encourage other small societies to press on and not be discouraged.
