It is nearly eight years since I came to Christian Science...

It is nearly eight years since I came to Christian Science for healing. I was a traveling salesman, and for two years before leaving the road had been subject to periods of intense agony. The first diagnosis was intestinal indigestion. The attacks increased in frequency and severity, and I again sought a diagnosis and was told that my trouble was gallstones. An operation was recommended, with the cheering information that I might receive permanent benefit, but that probably future operations would be necessary. Another physician confirmed this diagnosis.

Shortly afterwards I left the road and was depending, for temporary relief, on medicine which was being taken daily. At this time Christian Science was brought to my notice by a man who had just been employed by the concern with which I had been connected for many years. He gave me a copy of the Journal, and on looking over the list of practitioners we selected the one that was nearest. I applied for and began to receive treatment at once. As I now know, my healing must have been immediate, but in a condition of great fear I continued treatment for twenty-one days, when I was lovingly told that further help was not needed. On the advice of the practitioner I secured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy as soon as treatment was begun, also began attending the Sunday services and Wednesday evening meetings. Since that time I have missed very few services and it is my daily practice to read the Bible together with Science and Health or other authorized literature. A few days after turning to Christian Science I threw away all material remedies and from that time all my needs have been met by this healing truth.

Not only was the condition for the healing of which I first came to Christian Science, with its various complications, healed, but other physical discords were eliminated and the whole tenor of my life was changed. I had always lived the life of the worldly and indulged the appetites for ease and pleasure. I used tobacco to excess, and liquor, while it never obtained sufficient hold to become a habit, was indulged in on the grounds of business advantage and conviviality. I soon found the tobacco habit slipping away rather against my will. I had held on to it as somewhat of a personal privilege that could not injure anyone, but the statement of our Leader in Science and Health (p. 407), "Puffing the obnoxious fumes of tobacco, or chewing a leaf naturally attractive to no creature except a loathsome worm, is at least disgusting," had done its work and the habit disappeared. The need for a stand on the liquor question soon came and, needless to say, it was taken. Every seeming sacrifice has been rewarded with an enlarged blessing.
