For three years and a half I had not been without a nurse...
For three years and a half I had not been without a nurse for even a day. Then in the fall of 1917, through the ministrations of Christian Science, I was healed of the fears which held me in bondage. As the result of a nervous shock I had become so full of fear that for months I was afraid to stay alone in a room even for a moment, and was never without certain medicines. If I crossed the room without taking my medicine bottles with me, I felt as if I were miles from all help. After a time this condition had abated to a certain extent, but I continued to live in extreme fear, and became a burden to all those about me as well as to myself. Later a specialist ascribed this condition to intestinal trouble, and various diets were tried with little success.
Finally, after I had been for nine weeks in a sanitarium, my mother, who had been studying Christian Science for some months, took me and the nurse who attended me into her home. She tried to interest me in Science, but I was afraid to give up my medicines. At this time I was taking tonic hypodermic injections every day, bromide quite frequently, besides remedies for bowel trouble. Through dread of after effects my diet had become limited to almost nothing, and even that little I ate in such fear that I often lay awake half the night as a result. One despairing day I picked up "Miscellaneous Writings" and began to read the testimonies. At once I was filled with hope. About ten days later I abandoned all material remedies and had my first Christian Science treatment. Immediately I began to sleep better and eat more normally. I three weeks I returned home to my husband and children, and in five weeks let the trained nurse go. The first two months I had treatment almost every day, but the intervals between treatments grew as, through study, the truth began to unfold to me and I learned to help myself to some extent. The healing has been permanent and has been followed by added blessings.
With perseverance I hope I shall some day be able to help others and carry to them this superlative blessing. I feel that a great debt of gratitude is due all those who helped to lead me to this beautiful truth, and especially to Mrs. Eddy for her message of salvation to mankind. Above all I am thankful to God, the source of all good.
