Your statement that America "is giving way before a mental panic" is very much to the point. The churches, whose teachings should allay fear and heal disease, are closed, as you report. You will be interested to know that the Christian Science churches of Los Angeles have petitioned the City Council to permit the churches of the city to resume services on the broad ground that "all Christian people acknowledge the omnipotent power of God, ... reliance upon which effectively aids in destroying the dread of contagion."

Christian Scientists in common with all good citizens interest themselves in opposing legislation which has for its object autocratic control, or which invades the inherent rights of the individual. They realize that the common welfare must be safeguarded at the polls against persons and systems who would exploit the many for the benefit of the few. To this extent they enter "politics," which Webster defines as "the science dealing with the organization, regulation, and administration of a state, in both its internal and external affairs." But this is done as individuals, not as an organization.

The Church of Christ, Scientist, was founded by Mary Baker Eddy "to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). It is devoted to this sole purpose, and in caring for the trust committed to it finds ample and constantly increasing opportunity for its utmost endeavor.
