One of my earliest experiences in Christian Science...
One of my earliest experiences in Christian Science taught me a wonderful lesson in faith. It was my first demonstration without the aid of a practitioner and was so illuminating and convincing that I have ever since taken my problems directly to God, knowing that the prayer of faith was already answered. Impossible of misunderstanding are the instructions given in the Bible, in the light of Christian Science, regarding the prayer of faith. In one instance it teaches, according to the Revised Version, "All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye have received them;" and this is followed by the definite promise, "And ye shall have them." In very truth the understanding that rises to the sublime height of knowing that it has already received never fails of the fulfillment of the promise, "And ye shall have."
I came into Christian Science in the first place through the healing of a diseased ear. This healing was brought about in two weeks by the faithful work of a practitioner. At the first treatment there was awakened in me such a desire to know more of this wonderful truth that I purchased a copy of Science and Health on my way home, read it far into the night, and for days and weeks thereafter spent every available moment studying it in connection with the Bible. I had always considered myself something of a Bible student, but realize now that I was still on the threshold until the "key" thus placed in my hand enabled me to enter into the inner sanctuary and find the wonderful treasures of Truth—the "pearl of great price."
While I was in no sense an invalid at that time, there were several so-called chronic ailments which deprived me of a great amount of freedom and comfort, but as I earnestly studied Christian Science these were one by one eliminated from consciousness and likewise, of course, from experience. Four attacks of diphtheria and numerous attacks of tonsillitis and other ailments affecting the throat had left it in a badly diseased condition. Treatments by various specialists failed to give anything but temporary relief, and even an operation was deemed inadvisable because of the seriousness of conditions.
