Distribution Work
The distribution work of the Christian Science movement has been described as "joy-giving and health-bestowing," and its blessings have come in such large measure to the writer that she feels a deep desire to express gratitude for the privilege of participation in this activity by relating some experiences. When first asked to undertake that branch of the work which requires that the literature be left at certain designated addresses on a route, it seemed impossible to have courage to do so in some places, and very improbable that she could manifest enough wisdom to have the helpful conversations and experiences which other distributors were able to bring out.
This wrong state of thought was banished by the realization that "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way" (Science and Health, p. 454), and the prayer for guidance in this work has always been answered according to the need. The first shining step in understanding along this line was the realization that it is impossible to go to any place where Love is not present, that divine Love has always preceded us, and that as the manifestation of Love, Truth, and Life is in reality always present, it is our great privilege to accept the joy and protection of this angel thought.
The next step destroyed all sense of personal responsibility in this distribution work, for it was clearly seen that it is not the person but the literature which is the missionary. As we realize that there is one Giver, infinite Mind, and that the ideas of Mind are the receivers, we see the work in a truer light, and love it accordingly. No sense of weariness can come to one whose thought is filled with gratitude for thus being a messenger for the "streams of love,"—to quote from a familiar hymn,—and there is no thought of anxiety lest we say too much or too little. Being obedient like Paul to the heavenly vision, we can know that Love, Life, and Truth guide and care for every detail of the work, and will speak through us if necessary. We can thus go confidently, joyfully, and serenely on our way.
