Before I had any conception or understanding of Spirit...
Before I had any conception or understanding of Spirit or Principle, as God is revealed to us in Christian Science, I was one of the most unhappy people in the world, for I was clinging to a belief in chronic stomach trouble, colds, headaches, skin diseases, nervousness, pains and aches of so many descriptions that I can recall only a small part of them; for at times it seemed that if I could pass from this world I would be all the better for it. Material remedies of many descriptions were tried; some gave temporary relief, but I seemed to get worse instead of better.
Since learning of Christian Science, which I have been studying since about the first of April, 1911, I have been growing slowly but steadily to be one of the most happy persons of this world, for now I have no pains; most of them left me as soon as I had finished reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had one treatment from a practitioner. Many evil habits have been overcome, such as profanity, occasional indulgence in liquor, hating, jealousy, envying, resentfulness, prejudice, fear, and the like. Before I took up the study of Christian Science I had left the church that I had formerly attended, because I was so discouraged with my lack of any understanding gained from its teachings about God and man. I was doubtful of there being a God at all; and I am happy to know that He is not a God such as I had sometimes pictured. Christian Science has proved to me that God is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and that He is our life and will answer all our prayers when we learn to pray intelligently.
For all these healings and the enlightenment gained, for all the Christian Science publications and literature, also for class instruction, I am indeed thankful to God, and grateful to our revered Leader. Words cannot express my gratitude, but I am trying to express it each day by becoming more worthy of being identified as a student of Christian Science.
