Among the Churches

Current Notes

Waterbury, Conn.—After wandering from place to place during the last few years, First Church of Christ, Scientist, has at last come to a place of rest in a permanent home on the corner of Holmes and Mitchell Avenues in the building on that corner which has been remodeled into a fine church, one which is in every way adapted to the needs of the steadily growing congregation. The entire lower floor is a handsome auditorium finished in white with mahogany furniture. The second floor is attractively partitioned off into a reading room, an office, a directors' room, and a general reception room. Since the church moved to the new site the congregation has been gradually increasing from an average attendance of thirty-five persons to nearly one hundred, and the directors and officers of the organization feel much encouraged.

Christian Scientists in Waterbury first met in private homes. In 1894 they began to meet in the old Bronson Library on West Main Street, and in 1898 were organized as a church. The church has moved several times since its organization. From the Bronson Library it moved to the I. O. O. F. Hall on North Main Street, thence to the Institute of Craft and Industry on Leavenworth Street, and later to the corner of West Main and Meadow Streets. The Christian Scientists after that met in the Jones and Morgan Building and still later in the Buckingham Building. Driven out by fire from their last meeting place, tentative plans for the new meeting place materialized and the church is at present successfully established in its new home.
