Christian Science found me when I was ready for it
Christian Science found me when I was ready for it. For about ten years I had been battling with a facial affliction which doctors could not help or even diagnose. Not only did I try ordinary physicians, but specialists, surgeons, and various supposed remedial agencies, including the process of inoculation. My face and neck were in such a condition that the end of one's little finger could hardly be placed upon flesh which was not inflamed and distorted. There were bunches from the size of a pea bean to that of a duck's egg, and they were very painful. For a long time I could only lie with the back of my head on the pillow. For months there had been little rest or sleep; poultices were applied practically every half hour, and as the bunches softened sufficiently the surgeon would operate on them. Otherwise there was no relief.
After all material means had proved of no avail, and there had been over forty incisions on my face and neck, with the verdict from one of the best medical authorities that there was no known cause of the disease and no known cure, I turned to Christian Science. The strain and suffering I had been under for so long had its damaging effects upon my nerves and entire physical system, and there were times when I was not considered mentally responsible. Upon consulting a practitioner I learned that I must give up material remedies and sever my connections with the doctors. The third evening after discontinuing the usual applications, the pain was so intense that it seemed as if I could not stand it, and about eleven o'clock that night I felt that I must call the surgeon, and so telephoned the practitioner to that effect. She very quietly but firmly asked me to wait two hours and if possible until morning, and then let her hear again, saying that she knew I could be relieved and she would give me a treatment at once. Within the next twenty-four hours the bunch had opened itself and discharged copiously; needless to say, since then I have needed but the one and only real physician and surgeon—the word of Truth.
My healing was not complete for over four years, but during that time I had quick and beautiful proofs of the allness of God. Laryngitis, from which I suffered each year for seven years, was overcome in three treatments, and an acute attack of appendicitis in thirty-six hours. When I turned to Christian Science, nearly ten years ago, I was very worldly,—more a lover of pleasure than a lover of God,—and the forced period of retirement from social duties and associates previous to the complete healing of the facial trouble, was just what was needed to bring about a change of thought and action. I am grateful for all the experiences along the way, although many of them at the time seemed serious stumblingblocks. Thanks be to God, that divine Principle ever operating for good, and to Mrs. Eddy for our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which unlocked the Bible, closed to me for years. I have been able through earnest and continual study of those two books so to apply the truths therein contained as to prove their efficacy, and in every instance the seeming stumblingblocks have proved stepping-stones to a clearer understanding of God and a higher, purer sense of life and living. Whereas I used to love to live, I now live to love.
