When I began to study Christian Science, three years...
When I began to study Christian Science, three years ago, I was very antagonistic toward it for some unknown reason, although I knew nothing about it. At that time I seemed to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown and my husband asked me to investigate Christian Science, hoping it would benefit me. Friends lovingly loaned me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and supplied me with literature, but it was some time before I was really interested. I think it was the reading of the lectures that first caught my attention. When I understood that God does not send sickness and death, and that He does not make man capable of sin and then punish him for sinning, I felt this teaching was just what I wanted.
I do not know just when the nervous condition left me; but it disappeared. We had, however, no real test until the summer of 1916, when our little daughter, aged four years, came down with a fever, which developed into so-called spinal meningitis. At first there was so much fear that I felt I wanted Christian Science and medicine too; but when I understood that this was not possible, I knew that I could not give up Science. Now we can never be sufficiently grateful, for through the loving work of the practitioner the terrible sense testimony disappeared and Truth prevailed. The child's recovery was very rapid. In less than a week after her return to consciousness she was walking and talking again. She was not nervous and irritable, as is usually the case with children who have been very ill, but was so sweet about everything. She is now a strong, healthy child and unusually large for her age.
For this demonstration, and for many other proofs we have had of God's presence and power, I am very grateful.
