Having proven that the overcoming of the tobacco habit...
Having proven that the overcoming of the tobacco habit through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy has been permanent, and because of further proofs that the understanding of God as taught in the Bible and explained in Christian Science enables mankind to overcome sin and disease, I desire to testify publicly to these facts, trusting that my statements may help others to find the way.
In September, 1909, I first read the Christian Science textbook as the result of a promise to my wife, who had been helped physically by a practitioner some time previously. Having been a smoker for about thirty years, and because of a great need of physical as well as mental healing, I was ready to prove the truth of this teaching. As I read and smoked, the cigars did not taste right, even though the test was being made on a fresh box of my favorite brand. I however attributed this to the cigars; and not knowing that my thought was being changed and purified, I kept trying one after another, until finally they again satisfied and I was once more happy in a depraved appetite. This only proved that the habit of self-indulgence was strong within; had I known enough, the taste for tobacco need not have again been cultivated.
Some time later I awoke to the fact that I was still addicted to the use of the weed, and while puzzled as to why the healing had not come I was sure the fault was with me and not with the wonderful book I was daily studying. At this point I was willing to test Christian Science, so laid down the cigar I was smoking and firmly resolved to do my part. Temptation came for several days, but help sufficient to resist came also, and when I no longer remembered to smoke after a meal, the power of God, divine Truth, was demonstrated and I was free, for the desire was destroyed and has not returned.
