Truth Is Formidable

Times of trial are testing times, for then falsity is urging its claims to the utmost. The human mind is swayed by its arguments, confused by its excitements, perturbed by its threats, allured by its promises, and at times would gladly give it the verdict. But let us never be confused as to the issue; truth will have the verdict. Falsity wastes itself away by its contradictions, while our understanding of truth grows ever stronger by the affirmations and demonstrations which support it.

While truth is thus marching on to its inevitable victory it is attacked on all sides. Its adherents seem to have to meet hosts of adversaries who far outnumber them. Furthermore, the adversaries claim to be clever, and those who stand for truth will sometimes admit that claim with a weary sigh, when they should never sigh nor be discouraged, but joyfully turn to Principle, or Truth itself, and find healing from every weariness and sense of discouragement. Here is the unfailing remedy for those who find that error in its braggart boasting, or by means of its poisonous subtlety, is claiming dominion over them. Indeed, there is no other remedy, as our Leader clearly shows in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 380), where she says, "Nothing but the power of Truth can prevent the fear of error, and prove man's dominion over error."

Truth is formidable to error because it puts error out of action. The lies and deceptions which have tormented the human race are a great host, yet as the ages go by they are judged, and they pass under condemnation into nothingness; while truth, consistent and undivided, marches on. Very truly could the apostle say, "We can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth." But to work wisely we must know how to overcome error with truth, how to enlighten those who stumble in darkness. In Christian Science we are content to work with individual questioners and seekers, even as our Master did, and the vast import of this is brought out by James, who says: "Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins."
