I am very grateful that our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has made provision for us to tell of the blessings we have received through Christian Science. When I first took up the study of this religion the testimonies in the Journal and Sentinel were a source of great encouragement to me, and I hope that my testimony may be a help to others who are in bondage to the belief of hereditary laws.
When I was about twelve years old my health began to fail, and until I came into Christian Science I lived constantly in fear of so-called blind headaches, which were supposed to be hereditary. As time went on they grew worse, and for fifteen years I went from one doctor to another and tried all kinds of treatments and medicines, but the doctors gave me no encouragement. In the meantime stomach and intestinal and throat troubles had developed. For over three years I was on a liquid diet, and I had one very serious operation and several minor ones. During all these years I was constantly hearing of wonderful healings brought about by Christian Science, but always felt that this teaching was for people who thought they were sick, and if I could only get well, then I would look into it and see what it was; but I continued to get worse. When at the point of despair, I met a friend who had been healed of a disease considered incurable, and she asked me to attend a Wednesday evening testimony meeting, which I did. While listening to the selections read from the Bible and from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the testimonies given by those who had been healed, I knew that I had found just what I had been searching for. Next morning I went to see a practitioner and asked for treatment. I was instantaneously healed of the headaches, and with a few treatments was also freed from the stomach and intestinal and throat troubles. Other ailments were not so readily overcome, but this forced me to seek the truth more earnestly.
Although I was a member of an orthodox church, the Bible was practically a closed book to me until I began to study it in connection with the Christian Science textbook, which is indeed a key to the Scriptures. As Jesus says, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free,"—and we have continued and have been made free, as Paul says, from the "law of sin and death." I am very grateful for the privilege of having had class instruction, also for being a member of The Mother Church and a branch church.
