It is nearly four years since I began the study of Christian Science. At that time I was in the slough of despond, absolutely beside myself with mental anguish and despair. A state of intense nervousness, accompanied by many of the miserable symptoms usually attending that condition,—sleeplessness, stomach trouble, headache, and so on,—had been steadily growing worse for twelve years in spite of the faithful efforts of the best specialists on both sides of the water, until at last it culminated in a condition of acute depression that was almost unendurable and completely prostrated me.
During this time Christian Science had been often recommended to me, though never by anyone who was acquainted with its teachings or who had been healed through its ministrations. I had always emphatically refused to have anything to do with it, resenting the suggestion that a person of my intelligence and enlightenment could interest herself in what I then conceived Christian Science to be. However, when I had exhausted the efforts of medical science, and it seemed that my reason was tottering, I put aside my intellectual pride and asked for help in Christian Science. I shall always be grateful to the loving practitioner. She came to see me every day, remaining with me many hours, until the worst conditions yielded, and slowly but surely helping me to overcome the prejudice against Christian Science and Mrs. Eddy that still seemed to beset me and to delay my healing. I was born and reared in the Jewish faith and rebelled at many of the statements relating to Christ.
My improvement was perceptible from the start, but the complete healing has been slow. It has been no light task to replace the unhappy, sickly, morbid, sinful thoughts which had invaded my consciousness for so many years, with the glorious truths about God and His spiritual creation that bring with them health, strength, joy, and an increased zest for life. A wonderfully kind and able doctor who was much interested in my case once said to me, "I wish I could be of some help to you, but what can I do?" "What I need, doctor," I replied, "is a new set of thoughts." And truly this is what Christian Science alone can give.
