In the first words of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
In the first words of the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings," a glimpse of the truth of being came to me eleven years ago as one of the greatest blessings of my life. I was suffering from a nervous breakdown, also what is known as chronic sciatic rheumatism, which had bound me for fourteen years, a very weak heart (a condition which the doctors pronounced most serious), and other ills. Every known remedy had been used with only temporary relief. I was advised by my physician to go away for a while, as a change might do me good, so I went South. Through a friend who was just beginning to read Science and Health I also began to read the book, and I found the "pearl of great price"—the truth. I began to attend the services, but having been a member of an orthodox church for many years, understanding came slowly. I gradually recovered from the nervous trouble, but four months later, while traveling in the mountains, I found it necessary to have immediate help. I went into the practitioner's office with the thought of physical burdens too heavy to be borne, but came out free. The truth had made me free, but I had yet to learn that "man's extremity is God's opportunity."
As I went into a higher altitude I had the fear of a weak heart. I was stricken on the street and had to be helped home. As my hostess would not even hear the words Christian Science I had no way of sending for help, and I knew very little about treating myself. I would hide my book under the pillow and read a few words at a time as I was able. At first the fear of being so far from home and anyone I knew quite overwhelmed me, but I knew God could help me, and He did. The next day I was perfectly well, and the high altitude did not trouble me any more.
After my return home there was an epidemic of scarlet fever in our city, and nine in my home were stricken. Four of my immediate family were healed of the disease in its severe form by Christian Science, although there were doctors and health officers to contend with. The doctor said regarding my son, that one more degree of fever meant death, but after thirty-six hours his healing came instantly; he was up and dressed and ate solid food. Those under the doctor's care were sick for weeks, and one passed on. My husband was also healed of a severe head trouble, which occasioned his being entirely deaf in one ear; and a sense of supply has been demonstrated in many ways. My daughter had been delicate for years, but many ailments have been healed in Christian Science, among them stomach disorder, hay fever, and spinal meningitis. She is now perfectly well.
