Things that Seem
Surface indications catch the eye of material beliefs and pretend to be solid facts. Therefore spiritual discernment is necessary in order to separate appearances from "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." The average business man, priding himself on his practical nature, or common sense, as the expression is generally used, is apt to be startled when he discovers, upon making acquaintance with the Science of Christianity, that it is "the invisible things" which really count in human life, while the visible are but after effects of underlying causes.
This sobering sense of Truth works mighty transformations in people's careers, when reliance upon material props gives place to trust in God. In the same way those who seem to stand alone in the world, making their way against many odds, find through Christian Science that the powers that be are ready to work for them and not against them. They learn to brush aside the material evidences of their own limitations and of the world's shortcomings, thereby revealing the true inexhaustible reservoir of divine supply.
As fear is an enemy which enters into every human problem, the struggling Christian is in danger of being reached through that avenue unless he resolutely turns away from things as they seem to things as they are. Then he will be supplied from an invisible source and will himself possess the secret of how to feed others who also are hungry and thirsty. In proportion as the things that seem are set aside for realities, in that proportion does true success and prosperity crown right endeavor. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 570 of Science and Health: "Millions of unprejudiced minds—simple seekers for Truth, weary wanderers, athirst in the desert—are waiting and watching for rest and drink. Give them a cup of cold water in Christ's name, and never fear the consequences." This promised rest and drink are spiritual realities quite apart from things that seem. They are earned only by actually living God's word, breathing the mental atmosphere of perfect Love wherein no hate can dwell, and obeying God's commands.
