The Lectures

Kansas City, Mo. (Second Church).—William R. Rathvon, lecturer; introduced by Andrew G. Bodwell, Jr., who said in part:—

The Scriptures say, "If God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?" We are told not even to have a thought as to what we shall eat or drink, or wherewithal we shall be clothed. Christian Scientists are finding that these statements are full of practical meaning, and that the one great lack today, strange as this may seem, is not primarily a lack of material food and clothing, but a lack of a true understanding of God. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," the promise reads, "and all these things shall be added unto you."

This does not mean that Christian Scientists ignore the immediate needs of their fellow beings; on the contrary, through the Christian Science War Relief Fund thousands of dollars' worth of food and clothing are being sent systematically to the war sufferers in Europe. But Christian Science shows that the primary need is to seek first the kingdom of God, as the Bible teaches. In the book of Psalms we are told that "they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing."
