I am deeply grateful for the help that has come to me...

I am deeply grateful for the help that has come to me through Christian Science, and although quite young in this truth I would like to tell of my first demonstration. While working in the garden I injured my side and in the evening began to have dizzy spells. The following day I could not raise my head from the pillow without becoming weak and dizzy. My family were reluctant to call a Christian Science practitioner and wished me to have a doctor, but I refused to give my consent.

The next day as I heard the discussion about sending for a doctor I came to the conclusion that if I intended to receive any benefit from the practice of Christian Science, now was the time to try it. I asked to be taken into the next room, and as soon as I was left alone I took up Science and Health, which was close at hand. I opened the book at the chapter on Christian Science Practice, but at first, on account of dizziness, was unable to make out the letters. In a few moments this statement respecting sick people became quite clear and seemed to rivet my attention: "Their strength is in proportion to their courage" (p. 417). I dwelt upon this thought for a while, and gradually realized that in order to gain the strength I must have the courage, so I arose and walked to my room. This seemed the hardest thing I had ever done, but the moment I attempted to dress, instantly strength came to me and I was healed.

I walked briskly out to the family, who seemed somewhat surprised; but I insisted that I had been healed, and ate a hearty breakfast, helped to prepare the Sunday dinner, and indulged in some candy, although for three days previous I had retained no nourishment. As I realized that those about me did not understand, I recalled the words of our Master, "Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?" I however understood the power by which I had been healed, and for this my first demonstration in Christian Science I am very thankful to God. I am also grateful to our beloved Leader for having brought the truth before us, not to believe blindly, but to demonstrate for ourselves.
