In the notes on the International Sunday School Lesson...
Meadville Messenger
In the notes on the International Sunday School Lesson reference is made to Christian Science; and in commenting on the healing by Christ Jesus of the man who was blind from his birth the following statement is made: "Jesus did not talk to the blind man of the 'delusions of mortal mind.' He recognized suffering and sought its alleviation."
If this statement aims to show that there is a difference between the practice of Jesus and the teaching and practice of Christian Science, and that Jesus did not heal blindness, disease, and suffering of all kinds from the standpoint that they are delusions and not realities, kindly permit us to point out that on many occasions he denied entirely physical evidence, and in the case of Jairus' daughter he said, "She is not dead," although this declaration was treated with scorn by those present, who doubtless believed as does this critic. Christian Science, as taught in Mrs. Eddy's writings and practiced by her and her followers, has overcome not only many cases of blindness but also every kind of disease and sickness mentioned in the Scriptures and out of them.
Christian Scientists recognize, however, Jesus' greater understanding of this truth and his equally greater ability to practice it. It is a difference of degree only, and not a difference in kind; the same difference that exists between a pupil and his teacher with reference to the subject-matter taught. That blindness is a delusion of mortal mind, the term given by Mrs. Eddy to designate that which is opposed to the real or true Mind which was in Christ Jesus, the evidence is too strong to admit of any doubt at this day. The mere fact that Jesus removed the man's sense of blindness is proof of this.
