Five years before I learned of Christian Science the doctor...
Five years before I learned of Christian Science the doctor told me to try a change of climate, as he said I had contracted lung trouble from living in contact with a case, and was also believed to have inherited it from my father. The doctor said this change would not cure me, but it might prolong my life for a while. I was willing to do anything in order to be spared to take care of my little boy, so I went from Wisconsin to Washington and was gone a year, but came back no better, although I had been under medical treatment all the time.
A few weeks after returning to Wisconsin I was told of a doctor in Chicago and went to see him; but in the mean time a severe form of asthma had set in, and after a lengthy examination the doctor diagnosed the case as lung trouble, chronic bronchitis, catarrh of the stomach, enlargement of the heart, an abnormal growth, hardening of the arteries, and very low vitality. He treated me several months, and finally said the only thing that could do me any good was a warm climate. After coming to California I tried other methods of cure and endured treatments that are terrible to think about. Then I began to hear quite often of Christian Science and was asked to try that. Thinking it was a faith-cure, I did not pay any attention to what was said about it, but after a time suffering drove me to try it. I did not expect to receive any good, but wanted to have the satisfaction of having tried everything.
When I went to the Christian Science practitioner the first time, I could only speak a few words and could not sit up straight in a chair, but at the end of two hours I could breathe quite easily and sit up all right. I rode home,—about six blocks,—and helped to get supper on the table. My health is now better than it ever was, my home is happier than I ever believed a home could be, and I am a better and truer neighbor, a better wife and mother. The truth I have learned about God has given me new life, and there is a song in my heart all day.
