Early in 1916 I joined the army, and I did so without fear for my future welfare, feeling confident that God, whom I had so often proved to be my best friend in all kinds of trouble, would be my help and protection, for I knew that He was both willing and able to do all that was necessary for me. In due course I found myself in the trenches in France, and the help I had from God while there will never be forgotten. He was my help in every trial and difficulty. His loving hand was there to guide and take care of me, and I found that the greater my need, the greater was His help and care.
In common with the rest of the soldiers I soon found myself very verminous because of the almost total lack of washing facilities and having to sleep in dirty barns and the like. I knew that all things are possible to God, and after using my knowledge of Christian Science on this problem, I gradually became cleaner, until one day I was quite free from these pests, despite the fact that I still had on my old dirty clothes and was living under the same conditions. From that time, until leaving France, I was quite free from this trouble.
August found me taking part in the battle of the Somme. I was severely wounded, being hit on the head by a large bomb, which burst with terrific force just as it touched my head. After a few moments I tried to walk to get assistance, but was unable to do so, and lay where I fell, with all the fighting and bombarding going on around me. I kept lapsing into unconsciousness and getting weaker, and presently was dimly aware that I was slowly dying. There and then I called on God for His help as best I could, and after a little while felt that the danger was over. Feeling calmer and stronger and more certain that I should live, I calmly went to sleep, though the fighting was still in progress. When I awoke darkness had set in and the fighting was not so intense, and a few moments later I was placed on a stretcher and carried away; then by easy stages was sent to a hospital in England.
