It is now forty-two years since Mrs. Eddy first published...
Larimer County Democrat
It is now forty-two years since Mrs. Eddy first published "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Its teachings have been verified abundantly in the healing of all manner of disease, as well as in the reformation from sinful habits and appetites, and in the spiritual awakening testified to so often by its beneficiaries. Any honest seeker for light on this subject will have no difficulty in finding proof that the Christian Science healing of today is no more limited to hysteria than was the Science of Christianity when practised by Christ Jesus and his early followers.
Because it is human nature to attempt the explanation of all things from one's own personal viewpoint, it is not surprising that this writer should have voiced his misconception by speaking of Christian Science as "mental chloroform." As Paul has said, "The natural [or as Weymouth translates it, unspiritual] man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." Instead of being a mental sedative Christian Science, because it is based wholly and solely upon the Bible and is consistent therewith in both precept and practice, is the most powerful spiritual stimulant the world has known since the first century of the Christian era.
The statement that the cure wrought by Christian Science "may be quite scientific, but it is no more divine than a doctor's prescription," is quite on a par with that made by the opponents of Jesus when they attempted to discredit his healing works by attributing them to "Beelzebub the prince of the devils." The Pharisees who said that, blinded as they were to spiritual truth by their material conceptions, no doubt believed what they claimed, but their false sense of things affected the truth of the Science of Christianity not at all. And similar misstatements about Christian Science, although repeated continually, have not and can not hinder its growth, for Christian Science is the message of God to this age, and as such is meeting every need of men.
