From Our Exchanges

[John Abner Marquis, D.D., LL.D., in The Christian Work]

"Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God." There is an appeal to the church in the world situation just now which gives peculiar point to the advice of the text. It is a situation the church has never faced before, and can only be met when we are armed with the whole armor of God.

In the first place the church has a special opportunity to be of use to the world, and that is her business. The world is hungry and suffering for an army armed with something else than dynamite, guns, and poisonous gas. It needs vastly more than the ministry of consolation, deep and pathetic as the cry for that is. The demand is for the church militant. The call is to the active side of our religion. The spiritual forces of the world cannot remain quiescent while the material forces are pushing mankind to destruction. This is no time for the church to live a sheltered life. Its place is on the field and at the front, where work is to be done and battles are to be fought. Its whole fighting and working strength must be mobilized and put under discipline.
