Commercial Warfare
Greed and fear at work in commerce produce warfare, and non-combatants are the principal sufferers. Such warfare is but a phase of the general confusion in human consciousness as to real values. Were it understood by all that reality is wholly spiritual, the fierce struggle for material things would cease and abundance would be as ever present as is God Himself. The need of the hour is the readjustment of values by Christian Science.
In the world war of today, therefore, the moment has arrived when the mere military conflict is being sharpened a hundredfold by hunger based upon the belief that this can only be appeased by matter. The struggle for matter brings brute instincts to the surface, and the force of physical explosions on the battle field is supplemented by the tension and strain of mental manifestation at home. The world wide problem of high cost of living argues that perhaps man's body will not be sufficiently clothed and fed. The solution of this is found on page 62 of Science and Health: "The divine Mind, which forms the bud and blossom, will care for the human body, even as it clothes the lily; but let no mortal interfere with God's government by thrusting in the laws of erring, human concepts."
Fear is the wickedest thrust at God's government. It tries to create confusion in the minds of men, doling out arguments by the hour, so that the filibustering habit may retard the spontaneity which would be expressed by divine intelligence. A thousand arguments of fear may present themselves, but the mind that is filled with trust in God cannot be disturbed or influenced. "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways," we read in the Scriptures. Without the heavenly Father's knowledge not a sparrow falleth; by Him even the hairs of the head are numbered. How can there be any doubt that God is capable of taking care of His own!
