Loveland (Col.) Herald

During the past forty years, since Mrs. Eddy first published the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," tomes of sermons have been preached and tons of paper printed in opposition to its teachings by those whose concepts of Christianity are expressed in creeds, and who have felt the rebuke of Christian Scientists' methods of proving their faith, so concisely stated by James in the words, "Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works."

In one of these censorious publications recently circulated in Loveland it was acknowledged not only that Christian Science heals the sick, but also that "its teachings appeal to a very intelligent, well to do class of people, of considerable mental independence." The critic's thought, however, has evidently been so biased by his theological training that he cannot accept anything not bearing his own particular hallmark, for he attributes Christian Science healing to human will instead of the divine will. This reveals his utter misconception of Christian Science teaching and practice, wherein the human will, which is capable of both good and evil, must give place to the will of God, good, which is of course capable of good only. Although Jesus said, as he went about healing the sick, that he came not to do his own will, but the will of God, he was accused of casting out devils by Beelzebub, which was simply the oriental way of saying that he healed by means of human will or hypnotism.
