When the message of Christian Science was first presented...
When the message of Christian Science was first presented to me it was not welcomed, for old beliefs seemed so agreeable that I did not carefully investigate the teachings of Mrs. Eddy. In 1908, however, a rapid and decided improvement in the health of one who was studying Christian Science attracted my attention. To that individual there came through this study a healing which the doctors said could be accomplished in no way but through the power of God. Thus God's law was appealing to my thought through proofs afforded by its good works.
That winter, while residing in Michigan City, Ind., I was told by two physicians that I was threatened with diphtheria. Reluctantly I turned from them to accept the assistance of a Christian Science practitioner, and was quickly healed, so that the disease did not run its predicted course. After a second thorough examination I was released from quarantine and allowed to resume my work. There has been no return of the disease, nor have I had any medical attention since.
A few months later, in a city more than a thousand miles distant, I definitely concluded to investigate for myself the teachings of Christian Science. With new found friends I had resumed the long neglected study of the Bible, and one day when discussing the writings of Paul, what was my surprise to hear the unanimous opinion of these friends that some of the doubt writings were uninspired. The expression of doubt so startled me that I decided to pursue the matter further, and resolved to ascertain what Christian Science had to say about the subject. I attended a service of the local Christian Science Society, and noted that among the readings from Science and Health was one of Mrs. Eddy's expressions of respect and approbation regarding the words of the great apostle. This was reassuring. From that time I studied to widen my knowledge of the Bible, and that unique and convincing commentary, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," soon proved to me that its author had discovered the truth about the Book of books.
