When in a condition of mental distress bordering on despair,...
When in a condition of mental distress bordering on despair, the evidences of peace and loving-kindness in Christian Scientists whom I knew, caused me to investigate Christian Science. As my father was a minister I was brought up in a religious atmosphere, but even as a child felt the lack of any practical help from these teachings. At an early age I was thrown upon my own resources, and accepting a position away from my home city, drifted apart from the church entirely. From the beginning of my independent career trials multiplied and pressed sorely. I became so harassed, so despondent and broken in health through social, domestic, and financial troubles, that I felt death alone could bring relief, and wished I might die.
A friend spoke to me of Christian Science and persuaded me to procure a copy of Science and Health. What little I could understand of it appealed to me strongly, but like many others I was slow to appreciate its value. Having proven to my satisfaction that neither medicine nor other material methods could help me, I decided to try a change of location and environment, so moved from the city to a remote town. This change brought no physical benefit, but afforded a valuable lesson, as it proved my need to be a change of thought, not of location.
Upon returning to the city I was confronted on all sides with proofs of the healing power of Christian Science, and learned that this healing work was accomplished through a spiritual interpretation and application of the Scriptural teachings. I was indeed happy in the first realization that practical help is available from God through His Word, and the delusion formed by early teaching, that God causes suffering, was gradually dispelled.
