The Holy Ghost

Jesus declared to the apostles that the Holy Ghost was the "Spirit of truth," as we read in the fourteenth and sixteenth chapters of John's gospel. It was not until many years after our Saviour's ascension that the Holy Ghost was defined by scholastic theology as a person,—one of three mystical persons united in some mysterious way to form one supreme, anthropomorphic God. Mrs. Eddy, accepting the definition of the Holy Ghost, explains that this "Spirit of truth" is Christian Science, and on page 1 of "Rudimental Divine Science" she defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."

By reason of the Holy Ghost, proceeding from God and expressed through man, the ancient prophets received their revelations which enabled them to indite the sacred books of the Old Testament. In the New Testament there are numerous references to the Holy Ghost. St. Luke writes of the message which came to Mary: "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." Mary's mentality being filled with the "Spirit of truth," she spiritually responded to the law of God which enabled her to give to the world the long expected Messiah.

John the Baptist prophesied the coming of the Saviour, and declared, "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire;" that is, the "Spirit of truth" shall purify the human consciousness and consume as by fire all the errors of material sense. On the day of Pentecost the apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost. Their understanding of God's law destroyed their fear and enabled them thereafter to do many wonderful works of healing, to teach the truth in the face of violent persecution and martyrdom. Jesus, filled with the Holy Ghost, healed all manner of sin and disease. By restoring the dead to life he overcame all material socalled laws by the power of the Holy Ghost, the supreme law of divine Mind. He thereby proved matter to be powerless, without force or intelligence. He proved life to be eternal, beyond the reach of discord, disease, or death.
