Christian Science has been to me just as much a preventive...
Christian Science has been to me just as much a preventive as a curative. At the time I began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I was taking four kinds of medicine. I was said to have inherited a very torpid liver, and when quite young began to be troubled with periodical bilious attacks, which developed into enlargement of the liver and later into gallstones. One of the prescriptions I was taking for the prevention of the fifth attack of gallstones, which the attending physician told us would necessitate an operation; another prescription was to prevent a second attack of acute inflammation of the kidneys and bladder; still another was to ward off frequent attacks of neuralgia, which often required an opiate before relief came; and the fourth prescription was taken in the attempt to overcome a very serious trouble which was supposedly caused by my work behind the counter.
During my first year's study of Christian Science I had one attack of biliousness, which was quickly overcome through my own understanding of the truth. I have had two attacks of neuralgia, but these also yielded to the right application of the teachings of our textbook. The other ailments have never reappeared. No one knows better than a Christian Scientist how inadequate words are to express the gratitude and thankfulness that is felt for the blessings which have come from this divine revelation our Leader so unselfishly labored to give to all mankind. I am more grateful for the demonstrable knowledge of absolute truth than for the physical help. This knowledge is the only true preventive of sin, sickness, disease, and death, and only by learning each day how more correctly to apply our understanding of Truth, do we really merit the privilege of being called Christian Scientists.
On page 3 of Science and Health our Leader tells us that "action expresses more gratitude than speech," and it is this kind of gratitude which I wish always to express.
