That for which I am most grateful to Christian Science...

That for which I am most grateful to Christian Science is the new understanding of God and His creation gained through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I have many times proved the truth of her statement on page 390 of this book, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."

I was brought up in what is called orthodoxy, but when old enough to think for myself, my thought of God was anything but loving. It filled me with resentment that I was not more fortunate in my circumstances, and that God had created a world with which it was so hard to be satisfied. I soon found that this God in whom I had been taught to believe, was of no use to me, so I ceased to concern myself about Him. I never entered a church unless obliged to do so, and became a scoffer at religion. My chief object was to get all I could of pleasure while I lived, and the result was a life of self-indulgence, which culminated in chronic gout in the foot. I could only limp about, unable to bear any but soft leather boots, and grumbled at everything and everybody.

I was well past fifty years of age when Christian Science found me in 1909, and I did not expect relief from this ailment, for I believed a good deal in medical theories. Every remedy known to me had, however, been tried without success, and I was convinced there was no cure for gout. The explanation of Christian Science given me was so logical that I asked for treatment, which was promised me if I would read the textbook. I did so during the week, and the next Sunday attended service in London. I left the building healed, and walked about all day without any pain, although wearing rather tighter boots than I did usually, and have never had gout since that day. I have been quickly healed of severe fever and ague, and coughing bouts which used nearly to choke me have disappeared.
