It was in 1907 that Christian Science was first brought to...
It was in 1907 that Christian Science was first brought to my attention. I was living on a farm,. and seemed to be working beyond my strength every day. There was much inharmony in the home, and I was so discouraged that I often prayed I might die. At last I began to believe there was no God, for all my prayers were in vain. Then one day, when the darkness seemed the deepest, a lady came to my house on business, and seeing my great need, mentioned Christian Science to me. Later she sent me some literature, and after reading it I purchased a copy of Science and Health. This I also read many times, but without understanding it.
The following spring I was taken to a hospital to undergo what was called an emergency operation; but on returning home and resuming the hard work, I became ill with what is called quick consumption. I still read Science and Health, but only in a desultory manner. In July, 1908, I was sent to a different state, where it was believed the change of climate would benefit me, or at least prolong my life. At this time I also had acute attacks of asthma, and a very bad recurrent condition of the bowels. Being away from my family, who thought all healing power lay in medicine and climate, I decided to visit a Christian Science practitioner. I did so, and had treatment for some weeks, and wish space would allow me to tell of the love and patience which was accorded me. I was not healed, however, so returned to material remedies, in accordance with the wish of my husband, who had joined me in the West.
On my return to Iowa I gained slowly in strength and was only half faithful to the study of Christian Science, but I began to realize that many discordant conditions were disappearing, and as my thought grew clearer I could understand more what God is. As a result, harmony began to be manifested in our home, for I no longer saw error as persons, and this let in a great light. After I was entirely free from asthma, and after lung trouble, lifelong sick headaches, and many minor ailments had been overcome through Christian Science, I was given one final test.
