For about twelve years I suffered from stomach trouble,...
For about twelve years I suffered from stomach trouble, severe headaches, and a constant fear that these ailments would almost any day terminate seriously. Being engaged in the theatrical profession, I was led to believe that a worldly man, so called, was preeminent in every way. I smoked incessantly, enjoyed the social glass, and seemed to think that this worldly life was my only source of happiness, although I now recall, underlying all this, an inward desire for better things,—for a higher life, for something more worth while.
Physicians, in their earnest efforts to relieve me of physical distress, succeeded in giving me only temporary relief. I grew worse, and during the season of 1911-12 went from one doctor to another in a final struggle for freedom from disease and pain. In July, 1912, I was put upon a strict diet and given to understand that I had symptoms of several serious ailments.
Brought up in the Jewish faith, I learned to scoff at the name Christian Science, denied its healing power, and refused to permit it in my home, although I saw many proofs of its efficacy in the healing of a number of my intimate friends. My seeming antagonism grew stronger until August 22 of that year, when I awoke in the morning feeling very ill and fearing the end was near. I made a last appeal to my physician, who held out little hope; so that same afternoon I called a Christian Science practitioner to our home. A treatment was given me, and I was almost instantaneously healed. An hour later I ate a hearty meal, and I have been able to eat heartily ever since. Then and there I was healed of the tobacco habit, of all desire for liquor, and of many other ailments.
