Two years have elapsed since some dear relatives called my attention to Christian Science, to that glorious teaching which includes the understanding of divine, omnipotent Love, the truth which leads us all to the attainment of health, contentment, and true happiness.
For eleven years I was in bondage to a very serious nervous condition, a heart trouble, and bowel complaint. I suffered distressing pain every day, and it was often accompanied by very alarming symptoms. To this was added pain in the back, which gradually extended to the rest of the body and grew worse with every day. I was surrounded by the loving care of my people and no desire was left unfulfilled, everything had ceased to afford me joy. Withal, I was constantly tormented by the fear that death might be near. Still I set all my hopes on the physicians' skill, and everything possible was done for me; but neither the means employed nor the hygienic recommendations which I followed brought relief or improvement, and I was sometimes on the verge of despair.
After all medical means had failed I was taken in a hopeless condition to a sanitarium for nervous diseases, but here also everything remained unavailing, and the professor informed me that there was nothing he could do, that I must expect the condition to last the rest of my life. I now submitted to the disease without further struggle, there being no hope of recovery for me, or at least no hope of complete recovery, according to the physicians' statement. And yet how I longed to live and be well, despite the fact that I seemed every day to be drawing nearer to death. I had become apathetic and misanthropic; the laughter, talk, and walking about of others caused me to feel deeply unhappy and to suffer bitterly. But how I envied these fortunate ones ! I had no appetite; whatever I took was taken under compulsion, and I became more and more wasted, beside having new troubles added. For years I had been unable to walk without assistance.
