I turned to Christian Science after all material means...

I turned to Christian Science after all material means resorted to had failed. I had been reared by devoutly religious parents and had tried to live consistent with their teaching and example; nevertheless, I had in time lost all respect for their concept of God, and refused to worship a Supreme Being who permitted, even if He was not the direct author of, the ills of mankind.

As a child I was attacked by whooping-cough and lung fever at the same time, with the result that I was left in such a serious condition that both the physician and my family declared it would be impossible for me to reach man's estate. Owing to their constant fears for me I suffered from the various diseases which are supposed to attack a weak child. I continued to live, however, and finally grew to manhood, but well-nigh every organ of my body was diseased, the more prominent trouble being with lungs, throat, and head. There was a serious catarrhal condition, which in time attacked all the chest and abdominal organs, also filled the nasal passages, so that an operation had to be performed, including the removal of the septum and a large section of the hard palate. My entire system was poisoned to such an extent that I lost half my weight. Every known remedy was resorted to, but only temporary relief was received. During the last three years of this experience Christian Science was brought to my attention many times, but I was prejudiced against it as well as against all things called Christian, so turned from it, as I wanted nothing further to do with God.

As time passed, the hearing of one ear was lost and the bowels could be moved only by mechanical means. As a final climax there began a rapid loss of eyesight, which in a few weeks incapacitated me for all work and rendered me practically helpless. Several specialists were consulted, but the trouble was pronounced incurable. However, I was not willing to give up materia medica, so went to another city to consult a specialist. On arriving there I called on a friend, to whom I told my latest trouble; and his reply was, "Why don't you try Christian Science?" For the moment this question angered me, but my friend seemed so earnest and gave such excellent reasons for his acceptance of it, that I was induced to go at once to a practitioner. When treatment began I had not the slightest faith in it, but was willing to accept the truth, come from whatever source it might. The result was that the structure of skepticism I had reared about me toppled and fell, engulfing me in a mass of mental debris out of which I could not see in any direction. Thank God, there soon came a stream of light which revealed the utter chaos of that which is built upon human reason and the harmony of that based on the divine Mind. Following this came the rapid return of my eyesight.
