The Lectures
A lecture on Christian Science by Bicknell Young was delivered at the Grand Opera House. Prof. R. W. Coppedge in introducing the lecturer said :—
A certain philosopher has said that the proper study of mankind is man. All the effort which has been and is being expended on this subject by the philosophical and scientific world is deserving of better results than have been produced so far. The whole difficulty, however, is that in its researches and investigations humanity has left out the most important factor in the problem. Colleges and universities have dissected, sectioned, and examined with delicate instruments and powerful microscopes the physical body, considering this man. When I was in the university one of my fellow physical scientists spent three years sectioning grasshoppers, in trying to answer the question, What is man? His successor in office spent three other years cutting up crickets with the same laudable purpose in view; but neither one came any nearer the solution. Not that they thought man was either a cricket or a grasshopper, but they believed both man and grasshopper were material, and that the answer to the momentous question was to be found in matter.
Mrs. Eddy, however, has stood for the inspiring fact that man is a creation of Spirit, the reflection of divine Mind, God. With this as a beginning we are able to answer this question which has perplexed the scholars of all times. Through the realization of this great fact of being, humanity not only is relieved of all the ills to which from time immemorial flesh has been heir, but is offered a perfect salvation, physical, mental, and moral. Notwithstanding the wonderful possibilities offered by this new concept of man, some have been inclined to reject it. This does not prove, however, that the statement is incorrect, but only that they do not grasp the meaning and full significance of the proposition; for we know from experience that if a person gets any conception of the real thought of Christian Science, he either accepts it or at least becomes friendly to its teachings.
